Yeah, from what I heard of the manga it is much dark and more melodramatic - though it sounds like it differs also a lot from the novel. I think the drug was in the novel as well though.

I probably would have liked it more if it had been a shorter work, I just got fed up with it XD or perhaps the mood shift was my own fault, it happens ^^
