It kind of does, yes; or of reading the manga :) though I've seen people enjoying it a lot without having seen either so it's not mandatory either. But yeah, the first quarter is definitely rushed in a way that diminishes some of its impact compared to the first anime.

I also really loved what the first anime did with the Homunculis and Lust especially :)
